Homeless flood victims also does not have home in frontpage of a Mumbai newspaper

I have been reading Hindustan Times Mumbai edition from the beginning of its edition in Mumbai as its subscriber. Everyday morning it gets delivered. I look and leave to catch the punishing Mumbai train for my office. Today I was waiting the newspaper to know news about the flood situation in eastern India, particularly in Orissa , my home state . The paper was delivered and it delivers a news item on Orissa flood a 7 line mentions in front page “no food for Orissa flood victims”. Then a news item on page 9 with four photograph from Orissa, Jamshedpur, Kolkata and west Bengal with 34 line a general news which contains around 7 to 10 line share on “starved” and “marooned” flood victims of this 4 state. The story has been filed by Guwahati, Bhubaneswar, Ranchi and Kolkata HT reporters.

I am flood hit coastal Orissa and was in journalism for long time there before shifting to Mumbai with a PR profession. I had visited covered Orissa flood in 2002 and 2004 extensively for local DD programme ORISSA TODAY and STAR NEWS( as a part of BAG network) in 2004 respectively. I know how flood makes thousands of people marooned, starved and helpless .

I searched page by page in HT to read more on flood. But it is not there. In front page , now , Aarushi Talawr murder case report has taken place 38 line , bold heading and a photograph of while Sonia Gandhi’s UPA meeting has taken 47 line with a 3 column photograph. Then a 42 line flight fares hike report has also place in front page. The main place of front page on school math curriculum with 81 line 5 column report.

Above 50 lakhs Indians from eastern India are marooned, homeless and many of them “starved” due to flood while even a national newspaper from country’s business capital does not have space for them. For a newspaper Sonia Gandhi, crime and airfare is more important than life and livelihood of above 50 lakhs Indian. Thanks to news paper HT, which at least gave 7 line mentions in its front page.

I do not have access to Orissa newspapers which has now several national English daily’s Bhubaneswar edition. As newspapers are struggling for readership and localized content/stories, it is obvious that this 50 + lakhs is not news. A newspaper was writing about crime and politics…... is writing and will write also. Ii was need of readers. Had I been in the editorial of HT, I would have to the same. May be one of the reporter published in HT today is also from a flood hit state!
Had a good news coverage on flood situation came in HT front page, many impact would have taken place. News is informing. But it is also bring solution to many issues that even the reporter and editor is not being informed. It opens many times the solutions providers eye and ear. Mumbai, being the city, where all HQs of Orissa’s all top industry are located. A CSR might help the flood victims.

Journalism has changed and it is now a product. The ‘social cause’ behind news is olden age’s value. Newspapers are for their customer. Customer’s priority is guidelines on how to package a newspaper, not a requirement or a cause.

I am not blaming HT that it is not able to give required space in its front page for this 50 + lakhs fold victims. Rather I shall thank it for giving a some space and photograph at least.

Flood victims foes molt have home now for them. Newspaper does not have also space for them in prominent column. But same newspaper can give them a more prominent space if Sonia Gandhi , Rahul Gandfhi or LK Advani visits them. A visiting newsmaker may not deliver food to the “starved” flood victims. But he/she can bring media attention to it which will bring everyone’s attention!

Mukesh turns Rcomm's Saturn

In the recent times, there has been a cold war between both Ambani brothers-Mukesh Ambani and Anil Ambani . Now this war is fuelled over Anil Ambani’s business proposal with South African mobile major MTN. Mukesh Ambani's objection over Reliance Communications (Rcomm) venture with MTN seems to be a mere obstacle in the path of Anil's success. This deal will make RComm one of the biggest telecomm company in the world. Its just a jealousy of Mukesh group. They are putting dark clouds over the proposed deal. The notice sent to MTN about its first right of refusal to the deal has given RComm sleepless night. Mukesh should rather concentrate in his own business rather than trying to create disturbance. I feel that Anil’s expanding business and its success in market is the only reason why Mukesh is interfering into the matter.

Adressing a need @ wurlpool.com

Indian webmaster can bookmark their website in wurlpool.com to reach at relevant visitors .Keep on watching the formal arrival of the portal.wurlpool.com's co-founder Rakesh Verma ( left ) and Vivek Khandelwal ( with laptop ) in its first meeting to launch the portal 7th June 2008 in Hostel-3 in IITB campus in Vivek's room

Two IITB student launches India's digg

It is very interesting to see a new website started by two IITBombay student Vivek Khandelwal and Rakesh Verma. Vivek is a 3rd year Chemistry student while Rakesh is a fourth year Aerospace Engineering student. They both stay in Hostel number- 3 in 3rd floor as neighbors. Vivek belongs to heritage city Jaipur while Rakesh belongs to still city Bokaro. I had met Vivek in Barcamp and one day he called me to meet him. A regular in all Barcamp Mumbai planner list, Startup Saturday and all entrepreneurship activities , Vivek is an interesting student to meet. I met him in Gulmohar Restaurant in IITB campus and later in his hostel and attended http://www.wurlpool.com/ ’s first meeting on how to carry its launch and PR further.
Rakesh is a coding chap behind the portal. Rakesh, though Aero space Engineering student, is an ace developer. ….yes amazingly talented and focused on his mouse. ….an introvert who is (accordingly Vivek) camera and public life shy. He gave a presentation: webmasters can bookmark their site in our site and we will share revenue with them. Our immediate revenue model is on advertisement. Now we will use Google adsence .

He coined their portal’s tagline: “Wurl site, twirl cent”. Wow great tagline!

I asked to detail more. They told me: Digg kind of site but with a difference. I told: are you a content aggregation site? They said: Yes Yess …Yesss

We discussed a little on possible PR strategy and branding it as India specific content aggregation site. You can book mark your site and this is going to be one of the best platform for any webmaster those are not able to optimize their site to come on Google’s first three page. Their flash launch says: This is virtual syndication. …around the world in 80 seconds... rediscover the web…content + page views + networking: profit.

As per both founders- Vivek – Rakesh duo’s plan:……… it is an “user generated platform”. Say it entertainment, sports, education, culture, business, travel, trends, society, sports. …

Now, the flash edition of the site is online before formal launch. He had an chat with me as soon as it went online. A chat filled with “unparallel enthuse” with a dream to infuse newer experience for India’s webmasters. ” I am putting the chat below:-

vivek:

I am warning you, copy content will damage your traffic ranking

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) matter….Some one asked me: I shall copy content from another site and publish it in my site . What will happen? This was recent question. I have faced similar questions in past. Few questions are: a) I have an website in mobile phone jammer segment. My website traffic rank is 17. I need to be in first 10 in Google. I want to copy the content of the site that is coming no 1 in Google in certain popular key word. Can I come to front page of Google if I do that ? Has it any impact on my search engine?
b) I do not have time to write content. I need to add fresh content in my site at least fore the spider to rank me in a better position. Can I copy news item from other portal and paste it on my site ? c) Can I run website with copy contents to earn from Google Adsense? d) Can I use content from other site and use it in my site acknowledging the source? …

I have come across this kind of question in past. Last question was from a SEO who has more experience than me!

In fact, I have one answer to all question – you can not!!!!!

This step is disastrous for ranking of your website. It may attract punishment from search engine. An website has two visitor- one is human visitor and other one is spider or robots. Spider or robot does have only a virtual existence and it is part of a search engine’s algorithm.
Please do not go for ‘copy and paste’ web content. It will damage your ranking. Spider does not understand any law. It understands certain code and tag. It will recognize your content as copy content. Some people argued with me that we have mentioned the source. Fine! Friends, it will save you from copy right violation allegation. Spider will not be able to understand anything.
I have an example for you. I was working with a Mumbai based web group as its PR head where SEO comes under my supervision. I wanted to start blogging. I did few articles and posted it in blog. Blog was part of the website here. There was a cut throat competition to come to 1 number page of Google. My site was in 2nd page. It was in 11 traffic ranking.
As blogging started, I found it influenced my ranking. One day I saw my site on front page of Google being on 10th. My colleague started coping content from different website and put it in blog page. After few days I saw I am out and on the way to get out of page 2 even.
After I realized my mistake, I stopped the blogging based on copy content. Later, I could repair my damage.
As an online professional, I shall strongly suggest you to re-write your copy and post it on your blog if you want to put some content from any other website at all.
@How multi website owners do?
I was in Barcamp Mumbai 3 in IIT campus where a famous blogger was telling his story. He manages 200 website. Sometimes he gets content from other websites also . But he edits everything before it goes online. He was giving example: Suppose address of a doctor is ‘SOUTH AVENUE’, do it ‘South Ave.’.

Friends, please do not use copy content. I am warning you! It will damage your website page ranking.

Story of 3 Mumbai sites: how to design homepage

I visited two website. http://www.pinstorm.com/ and http://www.communicate2.com/. Both sites belong to the respective digital marketing company Pinstorm and Comunicate2. I had opportunity to visit both of the office. I have visited to both offices with out knowing that these are the office of both companies.
One common thing is that both website are looking structurally same. Home pages of both website are text based. You will not find much image in their homepage. Both’s home page contains the feedback coupon. I am yet to know why they have used feedback page in front page. I am trying to understand. But one thing we need to learn from their home page is that they have made it SEO friendly.
A text based page is more SEO friendly than an image based page. Spider of a search engine is able crawl the home page easily is it is text based. It faces problem to crawl we put more images in home page. I have always faced debate on this matter. People ask me a lot questions when I suggest them for a text based page.
Online communication and offline communication has a lat of difference. Colorful cover page and packaging attracts people to a books or document. But website is always buried under lakhs of websites. A search engine only can bring it before us if it comes as part of a search result. Once it came to front, we will be able to visit it. I am apprehensive of an image based home page as it may face problem to be crawled by the search engine spider.
Pinstorm and Communicate2 ! Both are two leading company we presume they understand SEO and SEM. I also liked the way they both have designed their home page. A website should have a text based home page. With out using many images, a designer can also design good websites. The design of Commincvate2 and Pinstorm is liked by everybody. The designer has overcome the challenges. Another website from Mumbai is http://www.rudraksha-ratna.com/ . It has used a lot images in home page. If you see the properties of images being used by this website, mages. you will find all optimized. Page opening time is also less.
I have learnt this site on how to use images if we are bound to use images.
